Reading Golf Greens Tips - The Secret to a Positive Attitude for Hitting Putts.
Reading golf greens tips starts with your approach to the green, make a point to look at the contour's of the green from about 30 meters out. As you walk towards the green focus on the green and watch for the changing horizon of the green. These give you an over all picture of the general undulations.
All greens are designed with a spine so water will run off and not pool in any parts of the green. If you can identify these you can rationalize the variation of breaks around the green. Next you want to check reading golf greens is the direction of the grain on the green. The grain generally runs to water or to the setting sun. The easiest way to read the break and the grain direction is to go over and look at the hole. Usually one side of the cup will have a crisp cut and the other side will be a bit rough. The grain goes toward the rough side of the hole. The reason there is a rough area on the hole is that after about five or six groups have played the balls follow the contour and grain and tend to drop into the same part of the hole. As they consistently hit the bottom side of the contour and cup the grass on that point of the cup gets damaged and browns off a bit over the course of the day. You then take the line between the center of the roughed up grass on the cup extended through the center of the cup and then project that line to your ball. This will give you a idea of how much break you need to allow. From here you can walk over behind you ball marker and have a look at the break from this angle. All you have to do is now decide on what pace you are going to hit your put. Because if you hit it hard enough you don't have to allow for any break in theory. The problem is that if you hit it hard enough to take the break out and miss the hole you may have a 6 or 10 footer back. A ball that has a roll that would finish 14 inches past the hole has the best chance of finding the hole. Any less than 14 inches and the kaos of grass and the balls heavy point if it has one starts to influence the balls roll outcome. Once you have had a couple of practice swings thinking about the pace you will hit and you have aimed at the apex of the putt. All you have to do is swing. Remember tour Pro's stats, they only sink about 55% of 6 foot putts. If you do miss don't get down on yourself just analize the outcome as to what caused the miss, speed or wrong apex aim point. Then forget about it and move on to the next hole.
