Keys for a Solid Golf Swing Starts with a Smooth Takeaway

In the golf swing a smooth takeaway with a neutral Vardon grip leads to consistency and increased clubhead speed at impact.

In your preshot routine for the golf swing, after aiming and aligning of the body, hover the club about 6 inches to a foot above the ball. Swing/waggle about 6 inches to a foot toward the target then back about two feet or so. Do this two or three times.

This relaxes the muscles in the arms and shoulders, allows you to soften up grip pressure without loosing control and gets you balanced on your feet in an athletic posture.

Keep your hands, arms and shoulders together. They should move as a unit. The grip pressure on the club should allow the head of the club to lag a little as you do these preshot swings. Once you feel relaxed and balanced with your weight on the left side (60%), address the ball.

Start your back swing with your your left shoulder pushing the club back, while your arms and wrist follow the lead of the left shoulder without any independent twisting or hinging of your hands and wrists.

The first two feet of the back swing should be smooth and slow. An outside takeaway (5.45 on the clock hand)gets your hands above your shoulders at the top. Start the downswing by shifting your lower body toward the target. As the arms follow the lower body's lead they will naturally fall into the slot producing an in-to- out swing.

Have nothing in your right pocket as your right forearm should almost touch your pocket on the downswing. With your torso and bicep touching throughout the swing, the swing path should feel like it is going from 7 0'clock to 11 o'clock. This swing path, keeping the torso and arms in sync, will make the swing feel effortless as arm and body levers move to impact.

This should promote good rythm and tempo in the swing. You gain maximum power if you gradually build clubhead speed and there are no sudden bursts of acceleration. The aim is to have maximum club head speed about 2 feet after the ball.

There are two lines in the swing. First is the target line which is the line to the target from the club head (6 o'clock to 12 o'clock) that you use for set up. Second is the golf swing line which runs from 7 o'clock on the down swing to 11 o'clock on the follow through.

Its a good idea to say a couple of key words in your mind as you swing. The reason for this is to take the verbal side of your brain out of the swing equation. Some examples are Smooth - hit, Money - ball, back - hit, swing - hit, Ying -Yang. It doesn't matter what the words are as long as they are conducive to tempo and stop the verbal side of your brain from interfering.

Swing plane check points are at knee level on the back swing. The club head should be outside the hands, with the wrist flat with the fore arm and the club face about 20 degrees closed from vertical. At the top your left thumb should be on the bottom of the club supporting the shaft and over your right shoulder. For a full swing your Left shoulder should be under your chin. Your right knee position should be at the same position as at set up.

Make sure you complete your backswing before starting down. Try a small pause at the top and then you will be in a good position to transfer your energy forward.

Now let it all go. When your release includes your legs, hips and torso, so that everything moves as one, your swing will unleash its true potential.

The feeling at the start of the downswing is like just letting your arms drop with gravity. You have to work on this feeling of your arms just dropping into the slot and your right forearm almost slapping your right trouser pocket in the golf swing.
