Golf Statistics on Drives off the tee

When you look at the basic data from tour professionals, most hit around 65 to 75 % of fairways and about the same in greens in regulations. This means the best are scrambling like the rest of us between 25% and 35% of every game they play!

It starts with putting. The tour professionals average's are around 1.75 shots from greens in regulation. In simple terms they average about 26 to 28 putts per round. They sink about 98% from inside 3 feet and about 60% from 6 feet. The average player sinks about 90% from 3 feet and about 40% from 6 feet.

The golf statistic gap isn't that great but the message is:

Hit to 3 feet or under on your approach shot and you have a 90% chance of getting up and down!

The pro's get up and down from 10 yards out about 97 % of the time, scratch handicappers get up and down about 60%, 15 to 27 handicappers 30% to 40 %.

This is probably the biggest statistical gap between tour pro's and the rest of us and it shows the importance of practicing shots from 10 yards from the pin and hitting the ball to inside 3 feet.

Pro's get up and down from bunkers about 55% of the time, scratch handicappers get out about 40% of the time and 15 to 27 handicappers about 10 to 20 %.

Put simply, try and get the ball to within 6 feet of the hole and putt like a Pro from 6 feet. You will have a killer game from greenside bunkers.

Up and downs from 10 to 30 yards from the pin is 50% for the pros and about 25% for the rest of us. That's from the fairway. Once it's from the rough it's still about 50% for the pro's but it's only about 10% to 20% for the rest of us.

The rough makes the outcome of the shot to unpredictable.

The Stats on hitting fairways and greens in regulation is about 60% for pros and 50% for scratch handicappers and 25% to 40% for 15 to 27 handicappers.

The message that comes from these golf statistics is stay out of the rough approaching greens. Use 50% of your practice time on recovery shots, chipping, pitching and bunker shots, 25% of your time putting and 25% on hitting full shots.
