The best golf tip ever? Its hard to believe what you are reading.
Now let me explain.
Do you know that many people don't actually see where the golf hole actually is when they are putting?
A lot of the time you actually see the hole in the wrong place which makes it hard to consistently sink putts.
Sight perception changes from week to week and hour to hour, depending on what you are doing.
If you drive for a couple of hours, your depth perception increases because you are looking at a focal point in the distance. If you work at a computer all week your depth perception will decrease.
As you get into your 40's, depth perception starts to reduce. This means that the length of the shot is actually longer than it appears.
A tell-tale sign is when you are looking for a ball in the rough and it is consistently behind where you think it has landed.
Prior to playing you need to establish on the practice green how you are seeing on the day - whether you are seeing short right or long left for example. If your depth perception is consistently poor a good solution is to pace out your putts.
Another good test is to throw a coin under arm to the hole. If you find they landing consistently short of the hole the point where they hit the ground is the distance that your depth perception is short.
So if your perception on distance is 10% short on reality, that means on a 20 foot put your perception is 2 foot short. You then have to pretend the hole is 2 feet further away than what you see.

The other problem is which eye you are using when you look.
Try this routine out to understand that your perception shifts depending which eye you are using.
Put your right arm out in front of you and make a circle with your thumb and index finger.
Look at a point across the room through the hole with both eyes. Now close your right eye and look with your left and then close your left eye and look with the right.
See how the point you focused on moves.
Try it on the course see how the hole vanishes!
So where is the actual hole?
Relax! The eye that has the same view as you had with both eyes open is your dominant eye.
Check out this video from Youtube which gives a few extra perspective on this issue.
So when you want to take dead aim, use your dominant eye and make sure you are right behind the ball to see where the hole actually is.
This is why it's so important to have your eyes over the ball when you are putting. Another good aid is putting a line on the ball. This allows you to take aim at the hole from behind.
The other problem is your perception when your eyes are over the ball addressing the putt. If your eyes are inside the line of the ball the hole will appear to the left of reality and if your eyes are outside the line of the ball the hole will appear to the right of reality.
